Unisquid is a character my son Rowan, created on many of his doodle sessions. I used this character as a vehicle to help motivate him with his spelling at school.

At first the spelling challenge game was a simple hang-man style program, but needless to say, I started getting a little overboard with it. Now it's become a daily practice tool for him.

I will be adding more enemies and bosses as time goes on.

This experience is intended to work on flexible screen sizes! Please enjoy!

Overview

There are 2 spelling lists to choose from. The listen button allows you to listen to the word, and the hint button will give the word some context. Please bear in mind that the voice is computer generated and has a British accent. This was clearest voice available from Responsivevoice.js (https://responsivevoice.org/), which offered a free service and API for personal useage.

Start Screen

On the start screen, you can practice each individual word on it's own in either Hangman mode or Word mode. Click either "Hangman" or "Word" to the right of the listen and hint buttons for each word to access the practice mode.

Challenge Modes

There is a challenge mode for both Hangman mode and Word mode. In challenge mode, you will need to spell all the words on the selected list.

On the next few pages, more details will be given on each mode.

How to Play

In Hangman mode, players will use the mouse to click the letters thay think are in each word.

In this mode Unisquid will have 3 Life hearts. If you choose the wrong letter, Unisquid will loose a heart. It's game over if you lose all your hearts.

Uniquid will get all his hearts back on the next word.

Correct letters will show as green on the keyboard, incorrect letters will be red.

How to Play

Word mode is a little more challenging. In this mode, players will type their word in the guess field, and click submit to see how they do.

Your previous attempts will show under "Previous Attempts" in the right column. Letters that are not in the word will show in red, correct letters in the correct placement will show in green, and incorrectly placed letters will show in orange.

Battle Explained

Each attempt in Word mode grants an attack for both the enemy and Unisquid. The power of each attack is dependant on how accurate your spelling attempt is.

The more accurate you spell, the more powerful your attack is, and vice versa for the enemies. Spelling the word completely correct will guarantee a critical hit, and enemy defeat.

A poor attempt does no damage to the enemy, and guarantees that Uniqsuid will take massive damage, so take your time! Your health gets restored after each successful battle.

How to Play

This is the most challenging mode!

Players will need to spell through the entire list, without a health bar recharge after each successful attempt.

In this mode, the words will also come up in random order, and you must keep spelling until you defeat the Boss.

Similar to Word Mode, the more accurate you are, the more powerful your attack, and vice versa for the Boss. This time, however, the Boss has more life and can take much more damage, even if you dish out critial hits!

Battle Explained

In Boss mode, damage is calculated based on letter accuracy, as well as number of letters guessed. Using too many, or not enough letters in your attempt will grant the Boss more attack power.

However, guessing the correct amount of letters for the word, even if the letters are incorrect, will grant Unisquid a 20% defense bonus against the Boss attack for that turn.

Critial Hits

Critial hits work differently in Boss Mode. For Unisquid, a critical hit will deal massive damage to the Boss, and also allow you to regenerate a little bit of health.

For the Boss enemy, a critical hit will deal a maximum of 40% or Unisquid's health bar.
