This is a project that I whipped together to help my then 7-year-old with his weekly spelling lists. The Unisquid character was something he came up with and drew all the time, so I decided to go with his drawings, creates some pixel art and gamify his learning.  The other characters are also of his creation and design, so all credit goes to my son's wonderful imagination and creativity.  I just refined them a bit.

There was a plan to implement accounts for teachers so that they could make their own lists available to their own classes, however it's a pretty large endeavour and has been placed on hold unless there is a lot of interest in this project, all of which, would be free of charge.  Again, this game was borne out of interest to help my son, but if it could help others, I'm open to the possibilities.

This project would not of been possible without the awesomeness of open source code, royalty free assets, and the willingness of their creators to share their work online.

The following assets were used as a foundation for this project:

How to Play

There are 2 main modes, Practice Mode and Challenge Mode.

Practice Mode

In Practice Mode, players can see the list of words, as well as "Listen" and "Hint" buttons.  "Listen" uses a computer generated voice to audibly say the word aloud, while "Hint" uses the word in a sentence for more context.

Hangman

In Hangman, players will use the on screen keys to attempt to spell the give word.   The same "Listen" and "Hint" buttons are available to aid the player.  Players will have 3 chances to spell the word correctly or by KO'ed by the opponent.  Spelling the word correctly will instantly KO the opponent.

Word

In Word, this is a shorter, one word version of the Challenge Mode.  Players type out their attempts using the input box, and then clicking the submit button to see how accurate their spelling attempt is.  The same "Listen" and "Hint" buttons are available to aid the player.

Once the player submits their attempt, damage taken by the player or given to the opponent is dealt, with the goal to reduce your opponent's energy bar to zero.  The amount of damage given or taken are variable and dependent on how close the player is to spelling the word.  Spelling the word correctly will instantly KO the opponent.

Challenge Mode

In Challenge Mode, in either "Hangman" or "Word" Modes, players will need to spell out the whole list, one word at a time.  Damage taken or given is the same as practice mode versions, with instant KO's dealt to opponents if the word is correctly spelt.  Once the player is confident about their ability to spell all the words, they can attempt to challenge the Word Boss.

Word Boss

The Word Boss Challenge is similar to the Word Challenge mode, but there are a few differences.  First, the words will be presented in a random order.  Second, the damage dealt by the Boss is more significant than regular opponents.  Third, the player will have to continue to spell the words until either the player or Boss is defeated.

Lastly, if the player correctly spells the given word, a critical hit is dealt to the Boss, and the player will receive a random amount of healing to their energy bar.

Good luck and have fun!
